Democratic congressional candidate Tom Malinowski is doubling down on his opposition to Donald Trump’s travel ban after the U.S. Supreme Court upheld the president’s Muslim travel ban in a 5-4 decision this morning.
“Whether legal or not, the travel ban offends American values and recklessly endangers America’s security,” Malinowski said. “Not a single terrorist attack has been committed on our soil by people from the countries Trump targeted, and many of their citizens have given their lives alongside Americans to fight terrorism. A blanket ban on travel from these Muslim countries only reinforces the propaganda of our enemies that America is at war with their religion.”
Malinowski, a former Assistant U.S. Secretary of State under President Barack Obama, is challenging five-term Rep. Leonard Lance (R-Clinton) in New Jersey’s 7th district.
“Freedom from persecution and discrimination based on nationality and faith is a bedrock of our democracy, and an ideal I championed as an Assistant Secretary of State,” Malinowski said. “To be safe at home and strong abroad, the United States must remain the shining city on a hill that people around the world respect and admire. President Trump has made clear he does not believe this. It is now up to Congress to act in defense of our most basic principles.”
