Former State Sen. Raymond Lesniak is still four months away from a decision about running against freshman Rep. Tom Kean, Jr. in New Jersey’s 7th district, he told the New Jersey Globe today.
“I’m still waiting until this November, and I’ll see what happens,” Lesniak said.
The 77-year-old Lesniak spent 40 years in the New Jersey Legislature before giving up his seat to run for governor in 2017. He’s a former Democratic State Chairman and chaired Bill Clinton’s campaign in New Jersey.
Lesniak welcomed Roselle Park Mayor Joe Signorello into the race but didn’t want Sue Altman to be his party’s nominee.
“She has no chance to defeat Kean because of her far-left policies,” he said.
Jason Blazakis, a former State Department counterterrorism expert, is also considering a run against Kean.
Republicans held the NJ-7 seat for 62 years before Democrat Tom Malinowski flipped the seat in 2018. Kean came within one point of beating Malinowski in 2020 and then won their rematch in 2022 under a new map that made the 7th better for the GOP.
