Shrewsbury Borough will recognize September 11 as a municipal holiday, Mayor Erik Anderson announced today.
“September 11 will forever hold a profound place in our collective memory,” Anderson said. “As a united community, we must pay tribute to the precious lives lost on that fateful day and acknowledge the incredible sacrifices made by the courageous heroes who answered the call to action.”
According to Anderson, non-essential government services will be closed on September 11.
Two Shrewsbury residents, Robert Talhami and Sal Tieri, Jr. died in the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center that day on September 11, 2001. Talhami was a bond trader at Cantor Fitzgerald and Tieri, a director at the midtown-based Marsh & McLennan, was at the WTC that morning for a meeting.
“We take great pride in being the first municipality in Monmouth County to formally observe September 11 as a designated holiday,” the mayor said. “We urge all our citizens to take a moment to reflect upon the lives lost on that fateful day and show our deepest appreciation for the selfless sacrifices made by our brave first responders.”
