Cory Booker, a former mayor of Newark and now a United States Senator from New Jersey, inched closer toward a bid for the Democratic nomination for President last night, getting the top speaking slot at the premier Iowa Democratic event of the year.
“You don’t give a speech like that unless you’re running for president,” said Democratic National Committeeman Scott Brennan, a former Iowa Democratic State Chairman, according to a report in Politico.
Booker’s flew to Iowa after voting against President Donald Trump’s nomination for Brett Kavanaugh to the U.S. Supreme Court.
“It is not a time to give up, It’s a time to get up. To rise up. To speak up. It’s time for you not to wait for hope but to be the hope,” Booker told the crowd,
To the 1,500 members of the Ioowa Democratic elite, Booker told his story of growing up in the suburbs and moving to Newark’s Central Ward in the 1990’s.
