Rep. Josh Gottheimer (D-Wyckoff) has a job approval rating of 47%-29% in New Jersey’s 5th district, according to a Luce Research poll.

President Joe Biden has approvals of 51%-42% in the North Jersey district, which includes parts of Bergen, Passaic, Sussex and Warren counties.  He won the 5th by six points in 2020; Donald Trump carried the same district by 1% in 2016.

Asked about spending programs under consideration by Congress, 59% said “the federal government needs to spend responsibly to keep the national debt and inflation in check,” while 37% believe “the federal government should spend as much as it takes to help the post-pandemic economic recovery.”

Of the proposals, 30% of voters rank infrastructure projects – including rebuilding roads and bridges – as their top priority.  That’s followed by health care reform (19%).

About three-quarters of voters (74%) say Congress needs to focus on reducing the cost of health care premiums, deductibles and copays, while 21% put reducing the cost of prescription drugs at the top of their list.

The survey gives the Affordable Care Act, also knows as Obamacare, an approval rating of 52%-45%.

On preserving Medicare, nine out of ten voters said they agree with Gottheimer that “our nation made an intergenerational promise to our seniors–a promise that they will have access to the health care [they] need in [their] golden years.”

When voters learned about proposals to eliminate the non-interference clause in Medicare, Eighty percent (80%) agreed that the federal government shouldn’t be interfering with what medicines are available to people with Medicare and that there are better ways to lower what seniors pay for medicine.

The poll was conducted for Center Forward, a moderate Democratic political action committee, in August. The sample size was 400 registered voters with a margin of error of +/- 5%.
