Almost one out of every ten House Democrats targeted for defeat by the National Republican Congressional Committee are from New Jersey.
The NRCC has targeted five New Jersey Democrats – Reps. Jefferson Van Drew (D-Middle), Andy Kim (D-Marlton), Josh Gottheimer (D-Wyckoff), Tom Malinowski (D-Rocky Hill) and Mikie Sherrill (D-Montclair) – as part of a list of 55 offensive targets for the 2020 cycle.
“We are hard at work recruiting strong, accomplished Republican candidates who will deliver our message of individual freedom and hold these targeted members accountable for the radical policies being pushed by the socialist Democrats in their party,” said Rep. Tom Emmer (R-Minnesota), the NRCC chairman.
Four of those seats flipped last November when Democrats won districts long represented by Republican congressmen.
Van Drew and Sherrill replaced twelve-term Republicans who did not seek re-election. Kim defeated two-term Rep. Tom MacArthur (R-Toms River), while Malinowski ousted five-term Rep. Leonard Lance (R-Clinton). Malinowski is the first Democrat to represent the 7th district since 1956.
Gottheimer was re-elected to a second term after ousting Rep. Scott Garrett (R-Wantage) in 2016.
The leading candidate to take on Malinowski is Senate Minority Leader Tom Kean, Jr. (R-Westfield). Kean’s former campaign manager, Justin Richards, is now the NRCC political director.
Earlier this week, former Gov. Chris Christie publicly touted his wife, Mary Pat, as a challenger to Sherrill.
The NRCC released their target list this morning.
