Rep. Ayanna Pressley (D-Massachusetts), a nationally-prominent Democrat who became one of the four members of a group of freshmen congresswoman known as “The Squad,” has endorsed Arati Kreibich for the Democratic nomination for Congress in New Jersey’s 5th district.
Kreibich, a Glen Rock councilwoman, is challenging two-term Rep. Josh Gottheimer (D-Wyckoff) in the July 7 Democratic primary.
Pressley did not mention Gottheimer in her statement of support.
“The COVID-19 pandemic has created unprecedented hurt and exposed the entrenched disparities and inequities in our communities, but it has also shown us why we so urgently need leaders like Dr. Arati Kreibich in Congress,” Pressley said. “An immigrant, a scientist, and a mother, Arati is ready to step up and provide real leadership for the people of the New Jersey 5th. She is ready to help our communities recover from this crisis, and to advance bold solutions like Medicare for All and the Green New Deal. I’m proud to endorse Arati’s campaign, and look forward to working with her in Washington.”
The endorsement was quickly followed by an online fundraising pitch from Pressley.
“After I defeated an incumbent representative in 2018 to become the first woman of color elected to represent Massachusetts in Congress, a 16-year-old Black man from my new district came to my last hearing as a member of the Boston City Council and said, “I need you to be more than a first.” Pressley said.
Pressley joins Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-New York) Ilhan Omar (D-Minnesota), and Rashida Tlaib (D-Michigan) as members of “The Squad.”
