Rep. Josh Gottheimer’s primary challenger isn’t satisfied with his response to House Democrats’ growing momentum towards impeaching President Donald Trump.

“To me his statement was completely ambiguous, waffling and wishy-washy,” Glen Rock Councilwoman Arati Kreibich said. “In this day and age, we need the moral courage to say ‘this is how we’re going to do checks and balances. This is how we’re going to fight,’ because clearly our democracy is at stake, and that’s exactly what the job is.”

On Tuesday, before the White House released a memo paraphrasing a phone call during which Trump asked Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to investigate Vice President Joe Biden’s son, Gottheimer said he would wait to decide on impeachment until after the House completed its inquiry.

The statement drew some fire from progressives, who said Gottheimer did not go far enough.

Kreibich, a progressive, is mounting a challenge from Gottheimer’s left. Over his first two terms in office, Gottheimer has made a name for himself as a moderate.

“I came out for impeachment long ago because I think we have plenty of reasons to at least do an impeachment inquiry, particularly after what has come out, even including today, with the whistleblower complaint,” Kreibich said. “It’s insane. It’s clear evidence that at least an inquiry is warranted.”
