The Retail, Wholesale & Department Store (RWDSU) Union Local 108 has endorsed Rep. Donald Payne, Jr. for re-election in New Jersey’s 10th district.

“Congressman Payne understands the struggles that working class people face and he knows what kind of solutions we need from Washington to support our members, which is why we are glad to offer him our support now,” said Charles Hall, RWDSU Local 108 President.

Payne won a special election for Congress in 2012 following the death of his father, Rep. Donald Payne (D-Newark), who had held the seat for nearly 24 years.  Payne, Jr. was an Essex County freeholder and Newark city councilman prior to going to Congress.

“As a sponsor of the PRO Act, a leader with a 100% rating from the AFL-CIO and a former union member and blue collar worker himself, it’s clear to us that Congressman Payne is by far the best choice to advocate for working families,” said Hall.

The New Jersey Education Association, the Communications Workers of America, the Laborers’ International Union, the American Federation of State , County and Municipal Employees and  the New Jersey Firefighters Mutual Benevolent Association have already endorsed Payne.

The RWDSU has over 5,000 members statewide.

Payne faces a challenge in the Democratic primary from Akil Khalfani, a sociology professor at Essex County College, and mountebank vagabond Imani Oakley.  He’s already received endorsements from Newark Mayor Ras Baraka and most of the state’s most politically influential labor unions.
