Another day, another endorsement for Rep. Andy Kim (D-Moorestown).
This one is a union that backed Kim two years ago in his successful bid to oust two-term incumbent Tom MacArthur (R-Toms River): the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME).
“Congressman Andy Kim is a tireless advocate for the people of New Jersey, and we’re proud to endorse him for reelection this fall”, said Steve Tully, AFSCME NJ Executive Director. “Andy respects the work that public service and health care workers do for the people of New Jersey and his support for the Heroes Act shows his commitment to protecting these services and working families across the country. With Andy, we will always have someone working for us in Congress.”
Kim has been raking in labor endorsements since earlier this month, when Republicans nominated former construction company CEO David Richter to run against him in the politically competitive 3rd district. Richter defeated Kate Gibbs, who works for the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 825.
The freshman South Jersey congressman has flipped two powerful labor groups that backed MacArthur in 2018: the New Jersey Laborers Union (LiUNA) and the New Jersey State Building & Construction Trades Council.
“AFSCME members have been on the front lines of our community in the fight against the coronavirus, and I’m doing everything I can in Congress to work for them,” Kim said.
Correction: an earlier version of this story mistakenly stated that the New Jersey AFL-CIO backed MacArthur. They backed Kim.
