The Teamsters Joint Council 53 has endorsed former Senate President Steve Sweeney for the Democratic nomination for Governor of New Jersey in 2025.

“Their trust in me underscores our shared mission to fight for fair wages and stronger protections for workers throughout New Jersey,” Sweeney said.  “Together, we’ll continue standing up for working families and building a future that works for everyone.”

Sweeney, the longtime head of the New Jersey branch of the International Association of Bridge, Structural, Ornamental and Reinforcing Iron Workers – and the international vice president – already has the backing of the New Jersey Building and Construction Trades Council President Bill Mullen, the International Longshoremen’s Association, the Eastern Atlantic States Regional Council of Carpenters, and his own ironworkers union.

Jersey City Mayor Steve Fulop, has endorsements from four Teamsters unions.

Straw polls conducted by the Teamsters Eastern Region showed that Donald Trump was receiving about 65% from their union members, although the union sought to play down the results of that vote.  While the International Brotherhood of Teamsters is not taking sides in the presidential race, the Pennsylvania Conference of Teamsters, which includes New Jersey, has endorsed Kamala Harris.
