Donald Robert Pavlak Jr. defeated James Freeswick in the Democratic primary for mayor of Wayne.
Pavlak, who had the endorsement of the local Democratic organization, leads, 64.5%-35.5%.
He will face four-term Republican Mayor Christopher Vergano.
Wayne has not elected a Democratic mayor since 1997, when David Waks was re-elected to a second term. He resigned in 2000 to become a Superior Court Judge.
