New TV ad seeks approval of legal weed

A second TV asking voters to improve a referendum that would legalize adult-use marijuana began airing today on cable television stations across New Jersey.

The ad, “Justice,” is being run by NJ CAN 2020, a coalition of New Jersey organizations that are seeking voter approval of the November 3 referendum.  The ad makes the case current laws unfairly put New Jerseyans convicted of recreational marijuana use by challenging their opportunities to find employment and housing.

Script: “Right now in New Jersey, unjust marijuana laws in New Jersey put so many people one decision away from a life where it’s hard to get a job, hard to find a place to live, hard to get ahead.  Because simple marijuana possession can mean jail time and a criminal record for life. It’s time to vote Yes on Public Question 1.  Legalize marijuana in New Jersey and remove the unfair consequences that can ruin live.”

A Fairleigh Dickinson University poll released last week shows that likely voters are prepared to support the referendum by a 61%-29% margin.

“Public opinion on this issue has evolved considerably. Just a few years ago, in 2018, we asked about recreational marijuana legalization and found support that was well beneath a majority, let alone anything that approached the support we’re seeing today. Back then, 42 percent support what is being proposed today,” said Krista Jenkins, the FDU poll director and professor of politics and government at Fairleigh Dickinson University.
