It’s official: Primary election will be on June 10, 2025

By David Wildstein, December 31 2024 12:37 pm

Gov. Phil Murphy today signed legislation that will move the date of the 2025 primary election from June 3 to June 10 to obviate any conflict with the Jewish holiday of Shavuot.

Jewish faith and non-profit leaders called for a new election date because observant Jews will not use electronic devices, write, drive, or travel on Shavuot, which begins at sundown on June 1 and ends at 9:14 PM on June 3, the scheduled primary date.  Federal and state lawmakers, including Rep. Josh Gottheimer (D-Tenafly) and Assemblyman Gary Schaer (D-Passaic), sought political support for the moving of the primary; Murphy was quick to support the move.

The legislation only applies to 2025; it does not address a fix for the next time this happens in June 2038.

The New Jersey Election Law Enforcement Commission is moving to increase the spending cap to accommodate an extra week in the election calendar.
