Jersey City Mayor Steve Fulop has endorsed Kamala Harris for president.
“Kamala Harris will be an outstanding candidate and of course, I’ll work hard on her behalf,” Fulop said. “It’s smart the state party/delegates move quickly as we have a small window plus hard work ahead of us to defeat Trump.”
Two of the announced Democratic candidates for governor next year, Fulop and Newark Mayor Ras Baraka, are backing Harris; so are two potential candidates, Reps. Josh Gottheimer (D-Wyckoff) and Mikie Sherrill (D-Monclair). Two other announced candidates, former Senate President Steve Sweeney and New Jersey Education Association President Sean Spiller, have not yet announced support or any candidate.
The New Jersey delegation to the Democratic National Convention will meet on Monday to discuss the campaign. The 131 delegates are expected to vote to endorse Harris.
Fulop, then a Jersey City councilman, endorsed Hillary Clinton for president in 2008, while his opponent in the 2013 mayoral race, incumbent Jeremiah Healy, endorsed Barack Obama.
As a two-term president, Obama endorsed Healy for re-election, but that didn’t impact the race. Fulop defeated Healy, 53%-38%. After the election, former President Bill Clinton came to Jersey City as the headliner for a Fulop fundraiser.
