Former Burlington City Mayor James Fazzone, who ended his GOP bid for governor after failing to reach the ballot, endorsed State Sen. Jon Bramnick (R-Westfield) for governor on Tuesday.
Fazzone launched a longshot bid for governor last year but couldn’t obtain the 2,500 signatures needed to reach the ballot before last month’s deadline.
“Jon has admirably served the citizens of New Jersey for 20 years in the Assembly and Senate,” Fazzone said in a release. “Jon is an honest, sincere, and hard-working person who will always stand up for New Jersey and its people. We need a Republican in the Governor’s office who cares about what is right with New Jersey.”
Fazzone launched his candidacy in July but ran into trouble earlier this year when a new state law raised the number of signatures he needed to qualify from 1,000 to 2,500. He said he collected about 1,000 signatures.
Fazzone’s local wins were as a Democrat: he endorsed Gov. Chris Christie for re-election in 2013 and switched parties in 2015.
