DeSilvio wants opponent to disavow union

A hotly contested GOP primary for State Senate in the 4th direct has drawn an attack on the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 825 after a mailer that told Republicans who received vote-by-mail ballots that they should vote for “the real Republican team.”

The union is backing Chris Del Borrello for Senate, causing rival Nick DeSilvio to object to a union with some Democratic ties to define what a real Republican is.

“The same group that backed Hillary Clinton and Phil Murphy is coming into South Jersey to tell voters who the real Republicans are?  Give me a break,” said DeSilvio.  “They’re spending money to back a defund the police liberal who will carry their water in Trenton.”

A Gloucester County commissioner, DeSilvio has the organization line in Gloucester County for the 4th district Senate Seat.   Del Borrello, a former Washington Township councilman, has party support in the Camden and Atlantic portions of the district.

DeSilvio wants Del Borrello to disavow the independent expenditure from the Operating Engineers.

“I challenge Chris Del Borrello to prove he’s not a fake Republican and denounce their support,” he said.

DeSilvio and his running mates, Denise Gonzalez, are members of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 351, headed for years by a Democrat, Donald Norcross, before his election to Congress.

That union is backing Del Borello and his running mates, Matt Walker and Amanda Epinsoa, with a $24,600 contribution.
