Union Democrats extend terms

Union County Democrats approved a bylaw change on Tuesday night that creates four-year terms for county committee members beginning in 2023.

The move cancels Democratic county committee races this June, extending the terms of the current incumbents for another two years.

The new rule extends the term of Democratic County Chairman Nicholas Scutari until 2023.  Scutari was in no danger of losing this year after reaching a peace accord with State Sen. Joseph Cryan (D-Union).  The two had endorsed each other, which means both senators will run on the organization line in the June 2021 primary – presumably with Gov. Phil Murphy.

Democrats in 20 of 21 municipalities also voted to extend their terms of their municipal chair until 2023.  In a 12-7 vote, Roselle Park Democratic Municipal Chairman Dan Petrosky’s term was not extended.
