Mariann Brenner, a retired K9 police officer and author, has captured the Republican nomination for mayor of Roselle Park after defeating off-the-line challenger Jocelyn Greb by 8 votes.
She will face Mayor Joseph Signorello, the Democratic incumbent, in the general election.
Brenner defeated Greb, a local businesswoman, 232 to 224, 51%-49%.
Signorello ousted Mayor Carl Hokanson, a former Democrat who sought re-election as an independent, in 2018. Signorello received 2,529 votes (54%), followed by Republican William Fahoury with 1,261 (27%) and Hokanson with 852 (18%).
In 2021, Signorello was the Democratic candidate for State Senate in the 21st district. Jon Bramnick (R-Westfield), the Assembly minority leader, defeated him by a 54%-46% margin. Roselle Park went for Signorello, but by a narrow 136-vote margin, 52%-48%.
The last Republican mayor of Roselle Park was Joe Accardi, who won in 2010 after defeating Hokanson by a 51%-44% margin. Accardi did not run in 2014 and Hokanson won, 54%-46%.
