Two incumbents backed by the Essex County Republican organization were re-elected to the New Jersey Republican State Committee on Tuesday, fending off a challenge from allies of GOP gubernatorial candidate Hirsh Singh.

Peter Tanella and Janet Treamont defeated Michael Byrne and Sue Ann Penna by a 3-1 margin.

Tanella is a Cedar Grove councilman and Treamont is the Roseland Republican municipal chair.  She was elected in 2019 following the resignation of State Committeewoman Mary Comito.  Both are strong allies of the GOP county chairman, Al Barlas.   3

Republicans elect two state committee members — one male and one female — from each county.  Democrats award state committee seats proportionally, based on population.
