Jack Zisa has won a massive victory for a third term as Bergen County Republican Chairman, defeating challenger Raymond Herr, 391 to 192, 67%-33%.
A former mayor of Hackensack, Zisa was first elected in 2018 without opposition after Paul DiGaetano declined to seek re-election.
In 2021 – the election was pushed one year as a result of the coronavirus pandemic – Zisa decisively beat Michael Gardner, the Oradell GOP municipal chairman, 68%-32%.
Republicans have not won a countywide race in Bergen since 2013, but President Joe Biden’s faltering job approvals have the GOP bullish on their chances to unseat two-term County Executive James Tedesco.
Zisa’s candidate, former Bergen County Freeholder Todd Caliguire, won the GOP primary with 59% against an off-the-line challenger backed by Herr. But his candidate for Congress against Rep. Josh Gottheimer (D-Wyckoff) lost the primary after Frank Pallotta held Nick De Gregorio to a 919-vote win in the Bergen County portion of the district.
