I never thought I would have to write about the passing of Bill Pascrell, I thought he’d live forever. We all did.
The death of Congressman Pascrell is a profound loss, not just for those who knew him personally, but for the entire nation. Pascrell was more than just a politician; he was a force of nature, a beacon of energy, and a tireless advocate for his constituents. For those of us who had the privilege of serving alongside him, his presence was larger than life, and the void he leaves behind is equally immense.
From the moment Pascrell entered the political arena, it was clear that he was something special. I served with him in the Assembly and marveled when he took the floor to speak. His voice boomed and echoed in the Chamber. We all stopped in our tracks and watched this living legend carry on with his well-honed craft. Politics, which can be a grueling and unforgiving profession, seemed to come naturally to him. He had a way of making it look easy, as the rest of us watched in awe, trying to emulate his style, grace, and effectiveness.
Throughout his career, Congressman Pascrell amassed a treasure trove of stories, legislative achievements, and acts of kindness that could easily fill the shelves of the Library of Congress. Whether it was a memorable speech on the floor of the Assembly or a quiet moment of compassion with a constituent, Pascrell’s actions always left a lasting impact. His voice boomed with a command that was impossible to ignore. It was like witnessing a master at work, someone who had honed his craft to perfection.
My own path crossed with Pascrell’s many times during my 16 years representing Passaic County. I saw firsthand how he was always the fighter from Paterson, fiercely representing all those in his congressional district. When it came to elections, Pascrell was unmatched. He was the ultimate campaign trail warrior, fighting harder and smarter than anyone else. Even those of us who were decades younger struggled to keep up with him. He had a tireless spirit and a determination that was simply awe-inspiring.
But Pascrell’s contributions didn’t stop at the ballot box. His commitment to constituent services was legendary. He taught the rest of us what it meant to be a true advocate for the people we represented. He was fierce, sometimes ferocious, in defense of his constituents. To Bill Pascrell, public service wasn’t just a job—it was a calling, and he answered that call with every fiber of his being.
I had the honor of attending law school at Seton Hall University with his son Bill Pascrell III, and through him, I heard countless stories about his father long before I met the man in person. But nothing could have prepared me for the experience of meeting Bill Pascrell. His persona was magnetic, his charisma undeniable. When he walked into a room, he became the center of it, effortlessly drawing people in and making them feel welcome. Pascrell had a personality that could light up a room, and his presence alone was enough to make you believe that everything would be okay.
In reflecting on Pascrell’s life and career, I can’t think of anyone else who better epitomized the nobility and greatness of public service. He was a role model for all of us, and we should be so fortunate if our children and grandchildren grow up to emulate his example. Pascrell’s legacy is one of dedication, perseverance, and a deep love for the people he served. His fighting spirit should live on in all of us, inspiring us to carry forward his work with the same passion and commitment that he brought to it every day.
As we mourn the loss of this extraordinary man, we must also celebrate the incredible life he lived. Pascrell’s lifetime of excellence should never be forgotten, and it is up to us to ensure that his legacy endures. We owe him that much, and more. Pascrell may no longer be with us in body, but his spirit will continue to guide us, reminding us of what it truly means to serve. Rest in peace, Congressman Bill Pascrell. Your work here is done, but your impact will be felt for generations to come.
