You saved my life, not once but twice.
You keep me free from falling.
You saved my life, making it all alright.
When I don’t feel like talking,
You make sure I always see the daylight.
Daylight – Shinedown
I was watching the Oscars and took particular notice as Robert Downey Jr. won an award for Best Supporting Actor in the blockbuster movie, Oppenheimer. The movie was sensational and there were many fantastic actors and actresses in that film. Robert is one of our generations’ greatest gifts and it struck me that during his acceptance speech he credits his success to his wife, mentioning that she saved him by “loving him back to life.”
It raises the question – how many of us can reflect in a clear moment and truly give credit and praise to those who have helped us achieve our success? No one in the political world attained any level of success without the help of many others. It is easy to assume we landed on the top of the mountain by ourselves, but no rational being would actually believe that.
Each one of us who have lived and advanced in this political ecosystem can write a list of people who made it possible. That holds true to anyone who has attained any measure of success. We don’t get to be masters of our universe or titans of our industry without standing on the shoulders of so many others.
Shinedown lead singer, Brent Smith, wrote this song as he was impacted by the Covid Pandemic. As Brent stated…”Daylight is about the people or the elements in your life. This gets them to tomorrow.”
The short message today is to remember the climb was done with the unspoken help and hand of many others. Maybe it is time to remember those life savers and return the favor and help that next person out.
It’s amazing what the hard times can reveal
like who shows up
who walks away
and who’s for real.
