The following statements were made following the New Jersey Senate’s vote to confirm Gov. Phil Murphy’s nomination of Matt Platkin as the 56th attorney general of New Jersey:

SENATE PRESIDENT NICHOLAS SCUTARI AND SENATE MAJORITY LEADER TERESA RUIZ
“We believe that Matt Platkin possesses the skills and experience to serve with distinction as New Jersey Attorney General. He did an admirable job as Chief Counsel to the Governor during challenging times and gained valuable experience as an attorney in the private sector and as Special Counsel for Impeachment in Senator Booker’s office. Matt has demonstrated effective leadership as Acting Attorney General where he has been responsive to the need for effective law enforcement and proactive with policies that enhance public safety and promote equal justice. He brings a passion for public service and a commitment to social justice to his work as New Jersey’s top law enforcement official.”

FORMER NEW JERSEY CWA STATE DIRECTOR HETTY ROSENSTEIN
“Matt Platkin is one of Governor Murphy administrations greatest assets. He’s brilliant, has enormous integrity, he’s fearless, and I know of no one with a greater commitment to civil rights and the law.”

AMERICAN CIVIL LIBERTIES UNION-NEW JERSEY EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR AMOL SINHA

“We congratulate Attorney General Platkin on his confirmation, and the ACLU-NJ looks forward to working with the Office of the Attorney General to advance civil rights, social justice, public safety, and freedom for all New Jerseyans. As always, we will work vigilantly to make sure the attorney general faithfully upholds his oath to defend the state Constitution.  “The decisions of the attorney general have an impact on the entire spectrum of issues that affect all of us, including whether police officers face meaningful accountability, whether immigrants feel forced into the shadows or free to participate in civic life, and whether defendants await trial in cages or in freedom, among countless other concerns that touch our daily lives. The Office of the Attorney General has significant power to make New Jersey fairer and more just, and we will advocate for the office to exercise it to create a New Jersey where people can live their lives more freely.   “During his time as acting attorney general and Governor Murphy’s chief counsel, Attorney General Platkin has shown a willingness to collaborate with key stakeholders, including those who are often underrepresented in positions of power, and a desire to serve people rather than politics. We will continue our efforts to collaborate with the OAG on priority issues facing our state such as the expansion of police accountability, jury reform, sentencing reform, and the advancement of immigrants’ rights and access to reproductive health care.”

ATTORNEY GENERAL MATT PLATKIN
“It is the honor of a lifetime to earn the bipartisan support of the members of the New Jersey Senate and be confirmed as the State’s 62nd Attorney General. Since my nomination, I have worked closely with the incredible public servants in the Department of Law and Public Safety, the dedicated women and men in law enforcement, and our community stakeholders to advance the cause of justice and protect New Jerseyans. I pledge to continue to work tirelessly to end the scourge of gun violence, to strengthen trust between law enforcement and the broader public, and to protect the rights of our residents. I want to once again thank Governor Murphy for his trust and support in nominating me to serve the people of this great State as New Jersey’s Attorney General.”

ASSEMBLY SPEAKER CRAIG COUGHLIN
“I had the opportunity to work closely with General Platkin in his role as the Governor’s Chief Counsel. Whether aggressively prosecuting gun traffickers, promoting new crime intervention programs or empowering law enforcement in the fight against car theft ringleaders. He has demonstrated his effective leadership as Acting Attorney General in these past few months and I look forward to continuing to work with him to move New Jersey forward. “
