Searching for a new corrections commissioner, Murphy calls Kuhn ‘outstanding’

Though he had no updates on the ongoing national search for a new Commissioner of the Department of Corrections, Gov. Phil Murphy today lauded Acting Commissioner Victoria Kuhn – a possible hint that it may be Kuhn herself who is nominated for the role.

“We are blessed to have an outstanding acting commissioner, Victoria Kuhn is doing an outstanding job,” Murphy said. “Beyond that, nothing to report on the process.”

The previous commissioner, Marcus Hicks, resigned in June following reports of abuse, mistreatment, and mismanagement at the Edna Mahan Correctional Facility for Women, which Murphy has since announced will be closed permanently.

As Hicks’ former chief of staff, Kuhn also faced scrutiny over her history in the troubled department, but Murphy insisted when she was named acting commissioner that he had faith in her.

“Listen, Victoria Kuhn is an outstanding public servant,” Murphy said in June. “She’s got a lot of experience that’s relevant, including in law enforcement as a prosecutor. She’s in this line of business for the right reason.”
