Report: Christie may play Biden in Trump debate prep

President Donald Trump wants former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie to play Joe Biden in rehearsals for the 2020 presidential debates, according to an Axios report.

Axios reported that Trump met with Christie and some of his top campaign aides to weekends ago to discuss the upcoming debates.  Christie will meet with Trump at least every ten days between now and the first debate on September 29 at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland.

“The group did not specifically discuss whether Christie will play Biden in debate rehearsals,” Axios’ Jonathan Swain wrote. “But Trump has made private comments indicating Christie is likely to role-play Biden as he did Clinton. Trump has told associates that Christie ‘was better than Hillary’ and ‘harder to debate than Hillary’ in 2016.”

According to the report, Trump advisors Jared Kushner and Jason Miller and campaign manager Bill Stepien were in the room for the meeting.

Christie used then-State Sen. Bill Baroni (R-Hamilton) to prepare for his 2009 gubernatorial debate with Gov. Jon Corzine.  Four years later, then-State Sen. Jennifer Beck (R-Red Bank) played Democratic gubernatorial nominee Barbara Buono in debate rehearsals.

Stepien was the campaign manger for Christie in both races.
