Former President Donald Trump won the Hunterdon County Republican convention tonight, securing the organization line in a county that shifted substantially towards Democrats during his presidency.
Trump defeated Nikki Haley, a former United Nations Ambassador and South Carolina governor, 106-50, or 68%-32%.
He’ll now run on ticket in the county with U.S. Senate candidate Christine Serrano Glassner, the mayor of Mendham Borough and a longtime Trump ally, along with Rep. Thomas Kean, Jr. (R-Westfield) and incumbent Hunterdon County Commissioners Susan Soloway and Jeff Kuhl. Serrano Glassner won her own contested convention vote tonight against several other candidates.
Hunterdon Republicans held the earliest county convention on the GOP side this year, so the vote is the first direct indication of how popular Trump remains among New Jersey Republicans. The answer appears resounding: Trump, the likely GOP nominee for president a third time in a row, still has a strong hold over the Republican party faithful in the Garden State.
In 2020, Hunterdon County made up about 3.3% of the total votes cast in the statewide Republican primary.
