Report: Sununu plans to endorse Nikki Haley tonight

Despite being heavily courted by Chris Christie, New Hampshire Gov. Chris Sununu will endorse former United Ambassador Nikki Haley for the Republican presidential nomination, according to a report from WMUR-TV.

Sununu’s support is considered a big deal among New Hampshire Republicans seeking an alternative to the front runner, former President Donald Trump.

Micah Rasmussen, the director of the Rebovich Institute for New Jersey Politics at Rider University, said this was a “fatal blow for Christie, who put an enormous amount of effort and credence into his relationship with Sununu and had been hoping for a strong performance in New Hampshire.”

A Monmouth University/Washington Post Poll released last month shows Trump with a 46%-18% lead over Haley among likely New Hampshire GOP primary voters, with Christie in third place at 11%, followed by Vivek Ramaswamy at 8% and DeSantis at 7%.

The same poll put Sununu’s job approval among Republicans at 81%-17%; 14% of Republicans said they would be more likely to support someone if Sununu endorsed them, 5% suggested they would be less likely, and 80% said it would make no difference.

Sununu had joined Christie at several campaign events.  He’d done the same with Haley and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis.
