Donald Trump wins N.J. GOP presidential primary uncontested

Any anti-Trump votes had to come via write-ins

Donald Trump is officially the New Jersey GOP’s choice for president once again, with the former president winning today’s Republican presidential primary uncontested.

Unlike in other states, where now-former candidates like Nikki Haley and Ron DeSantis still appeared on the ballot, Trump was the only name presented to New Jersey voters. Any voter who wanted to vote for someone else had to do so via write-ins.

Even if there had been a named Trump opponent on the ballot, though, they likely wouldn’t have gotten far. New Jersey Republicans, like Republicans elsewhere around the country, have largely coalesced behind Trump; all three Republican congressmen from New Jersey are supporting the former president, as are most GOP state legislators and gubernatorial candidates (with one notable exception).

But thanks to Republican National Convention (RNC) rules penalizing states that hold their primaries after May 31, New Jersey isn’t set to send as many voting delegates to the RNC as it otherwise would. Trump’s primary win comes with 46 delegates, but the RNC has only allocated New Jersey nine voting slots at the July convention due to the state’s late primary date, though it could still choose to give the New Jersey GOP a waiver before the convention.
