A new CNN national poll released this morning has some encouraging news for former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie: in a potential head-to-head matchup for a 2024 general election, Christie and Joe Biden are in a statistical dead heat.

Christie leads Biden, 44%-42%, within the margin of error.

He leads Biden by ten points among men and trails by just four points among women; Christie has a four-point lead among independents.

Other Republicans perform roughly the same as Christie in a matchup with Biden:

* Donald Trump 47%, Biden 46%
* Nikki Haley 49%, Biden 43%
* Mike Pence 46%, Biden 44%
* Tim Scott, 46%, Biden 44%
* Biden 46%, Vivek Ramaswamy 45%
* Biden 47%, Ron DeSantis 47%

The bad news for Christie in the general election poll may be why he never makes it to the fall: among Republicans, Christie has a 76%-5% lead over Biden, with 16% of Republicans saying they would vote for someone else and another 2% suggesting they would not vote at all.

Trump gets 90% of Republicans, followed by DeSantis (89%), Haley (86%), Scott (85%), Ramaswamy (83%), and Pence (81%).

Nationally, Biden’s favorables are upside-down: 35%-58%, the highest unfavorables of his presidency in a CNN poll.  Trump is at 35%-56%.  Two-thirds of Democrats (67%) think their party should nominate a different candidate, and just 1% of Democrats specified Vice President Kamala Harris as their choice.  Nearly three-fourths of Americans (73%) are concerned about Biden’s “current level of physical and mental competence,” and 76% worry about his ability to serve a full four-year second term.

Trump’s favorables among Republicans is at 75%-19%.

The CNN Poll of adults has a margin of error of +/- 3.5%.
