The 2022-23 New Jersey Globe Power List identifies New Jersey’s 100 most politically powerful personalities. This is an insider’s List. We left off all elected officials (except for two from Montclair whose elected office is not central to their influence), and most state officials through a Senate confirmation – unless the person would make the list even without their government post.
We looked at every aspect of New Jersey politics and zeroed in on those who impact politics and government in the Garden State.
A couple of reminders: the list is a snapshot in time. Someone on the list today might not be there tomorrow. New people arrive all the time. Some will always be powerful; others are on the list simply because of the job they hold. This list is subjective; there is no scientific way of measuring political power. You know it when you see it. There are no right or wrong answers.
You might notice that the list is dominated by white men. That’s not our fault, but rather a reflection of who runs New Jersey from behind the scenes today.
This is the 6th edition of the New Jersey Globe Power List since our founding in 2018. It is also the 16th power list developed by our editor, David Wildstein. He created the first definitive list of powerful people in New Jersey politics 21 years ago.
This year marks the first time the New Jersey Globe Power List is published in the spring and not late in the year. That decision to reset the publication schedule was deliberate. The power structure changes after elections and transitions, and we take pride in the integrity and accuracy of this list, which is considered the authority on political power in the state. We appreciate your patience.
