Matthew Hayden, a trial attorney from Hudson County, has been named general counsel of Young Democrats of America.
His appointment places another New Jerseyan in a key leadership role within the national Democratic youth organization, which was founded in 1932 and bills itself as the country’s oldest and largest youth Democratic group. The national president is Fatima Heyward, a Burlington County woman and the New Jersey Young Democrats president who won the post last year.
As general counsel, Hayden will advise the organization on legal and governance matters as Democrats prepare for the 2026 midterm election cycle. The nephew of fabled trial lawyer Joseph Hayden, he is a graduate of Seton Hall University School of Law and Temple University.
“I could not be more thrilled to have Matthew Hayden join the YDA team as our General Counsel,” Heyward said. “I have witnessed his leadership with the Hudson County Young Democrats and as a professional, and know that the organization is in good legal hands.”
Hayden’s appointment adds to New Jersey’s growing footprint within the organization’s national leadership ranks. Fellow Hudson County native Ashley Caleb serves as YDA’s chief of staff, while other New Jerseyans in appointed roles include Ruth Delgado, creative director; Angelita Martinez, deputy communications director; and Jordan Lewis, diversity and outreach vice chair.
“I’m really looking forward to this role and am committed to doing everything I can to help the Young Democrats of America continue to strengthen Democratic values across the country,” Hayden stated.
