Former Gov. Chris Christie, who told people to “get the hell off the beach” at the star of Hurricane Irene in 2011, has cancelled his March 23 trip to New Hampshire to headline fundraisers for Gov. Chris Sununu and congressional candidate Matt Mowers, according to a WMUR-TV report.
Mowers has suspended campaign events and fundraisers through the end of the month as part of a national social distancing strategy to stop the spread of the coronavirus, a statement issued by his campaign said.
“We will continue to connect with voters in other ways,” Mowers said.
The Bergen County native worked in the Christie administration and on the former governor’s campaign before moving to New Hampshire in 2013 to become executive director of the state Republican Party. He ran Christie’s New Hampshire presidential campaign and later went to work for Donald Trump.
He is seeking the GOP nomination to challenge freshman Rep. Chris Pappas.
