TAPinto turns 15 today

Online local news site has supplanted daily newspapers as the premier provider of hyper-local news

TAPinto, which operates over 95 franchised local news sites in New Jersey and three other states, celebrates its 15th birthday today.

Since New Jerseyan Michael Shapiro founded TAPinto as The Alternative Press as an online local news site in New Providence in 2008, the company has stepped up to dominate the coverage of what’s happening in municipal government.  A lane once dominated by daily newspapers now belongs to TAPinto, whose franchise owners and reporters are frequently alone in municipal governing body meetings.

“I am especially proud of the hard work and dedication of our franchisees, editors, and reporters, as well as our corporate staff, who have caused TAPinto to become a leader in local news,” said Shapiro.  “I am also very thankful to our nearly 1,000 advertisers that enable TAPinto to provide original local news reporting in more than 125 communities every day with no paywall for our readers.”

Each TAPinto site is independent and collectively has over 2.2 million readers.  The news site has developed a scalable model to help save local news.

A graduate of Rutgers University and Stanford Law School, Shapiro began his career in journalism as a columnist for PoliticsNJ.
