Three incumbent school board members in Weehawken easily defeated a challenger on Tuesday, with voters overwhelmingly approving the annual school budget.
Giovanni Ahmad, a first-time candidate who was appointed to his seat last year, is currently the top vote-getter with 591 votes, followed by Jennifer Bolcar with 587 and Meg Carson with 483.
The losing candidate, Chayanne Moya, received 252 votes.
The Weehawken school budget was approved, 455-89, an 86%-14% margin.
Ahmad, the township manager, was named after Board of Education President Richard Barsa died last year of complications related to COVID-19. Barsa was the Weehawken finance director.
As is the tradition in North Bergen, the school budget was voted down by a 69%-31% margin. The budget now goes to Mayor Nicholas Sacco and the North Bergen Board of Commissioners.
West New York approved their Board of Education budget by a 70%-30% margin.
Incumbents in North Bergen and West New York were re-elected with opposition.
