Marano, Russo get Dem nods in Somerset

By Nikita Biryukov, March 21 2019 8:20 pm

Somerset County Democrats selected former Green Brook Mayor Melonie Marano as their candidate for the county’s freeholder board Thursday.

Marano will face Freeholder Pat Walsh in a contest that will decide which party controls the five-member board.

Last year, Democratic Freeholders Sara Sooy and Shanel Robinson ousted Republican Incumbents, winning freeholder seats for their party for the first time in almost four decades.

Walsh is the only freeholder up for reelection this year. If she loses, Democrats win a majority. If she wins, Republicans will maintain their hold on the board for at least one more year.

The county’s Democratic Committee members unanimously backed Darrin Russo for sheriff.
