Rutherford Dems face mayoral primary

Incumbent who switched parties doesn’t file for re-election

Rutherford Democrats face a contested primary for mayor, with councilwoman Stephanie McGowan facing off against councilman Frank Nunziato.

Mayor Joseph DeSalvo switched from Republican to Democrat in February but wound up not seeking re-election at all.

Republicans are running Marc Marsi, the president of the Hoboken PBA, for mayor.

Marsi ran for State Assembly in the 36th district special election last year, but lost to incumbent Clinton Calabrese (D-Cliffside Park).  Calabrese beat Marsi in Rutherford by 1,554 votes, 61%-39%.

McGowan has the Bergen County Democratic organization line in the June primary.
