Roque hits back after rival presser

West New York Mayor Felix Roque fired back at county-backed challenger Commissioner Gabriel Rodriguez after the latter held a press conference attacking the mayor over former Bergen County Democratic chairman Joseph Ferriero’s involvement in his campaign.

“I find it absurd that they would accuse me of using taxpayer resources for election purposes. They are pulling another Donald Trump move of accusing someone of doing something that they are doing,” Roque said. “In fact, I am releasing a detailed complaint that I am filing with the Local Finance Board – Division of Local Government Services that demonstrates how they have abused the taxpayers by using taxpayer funds for their campaign purposes.”

Roque said Rodriguez’s and two of his running mates, Commissioners Cosmo Cirillo and Margarita Guzman, used a Toys for Tots giveaway in December 2018 to promote their candidacies and did the same using West New York Cultural Affairs Instagram account.

Ferriero was released from prison fourteen months ago after his conviction on federal racketeering charges.

“I question whether this press conference is to actually divert attention to those who are running and supporting their campaign (Albio Sires and Sal Vega). Under their administrations, there was rampant corruption, the town was put into financial crisis with a 51% tax increase and the police department was in disarray,” Roque said. “I believe that New Beginnings stands for New Taxes and Old Corruption.”
