Republicans flipped the last remaining Democratic post in Salem County, with County Commissioner Mickey Ostrum defeating Woodstown Mayor Joe Hiles by a 57%-43% margin in a race for Salem County Surrogate. He replaces Democrat Nicki Burke, a longtime officeholder who did not seek re-election.
The Salem County Board of Commissioners will remain all-Republican, with incumbents Cordy Taylor and Daniel Timmerman winning re-election.
Taylor (12,950) and Timmerman (13,288) defeated former Woodstown school board member Nelson Carney (8,966) and newcomer Issabella Goetz (8,461).
This was Carney’s fifth consecutive bid for county commissioner.
Democrats were in control of county government as recently as 2018.
