Public employees union leader endorses McGreevey for Jersey City mayor

The leader of a public employees union endorsed Jim McGreevey for mayor of Jersey City.

John Kilroy, the president of the Jersey City Public Employees Union Local 246, endorsed McGreevey in a Wednesday afternoon release. Kilroy praised McGreevey’s calls for an improved 911 center for Jersey City, which the labor leader said is experiencing understaffing and high turnover.

“With his leadership experience, dedication to public service, and commitment to improving our city, I believe Jim has the vision and drive to make Jersey City a better place for all residents,” Kilroy said. “His focus on unity and progress aligns with the values we hold as a union, and I am confident he will be a mayor who listens to and works alongside the people.”

In the release, McGreevey, a former governor, outlined a four-step system for improving the 911 center: a united communication system, advanced technology, joint training, and clearer protocols.

“John’s leadership and dedication to public service have been instrumental in shaping Jersey City, and I am grateful for his trust,” McGreevey said in a release. “Together, we will work toward building a stronger, more inclusive community where all our neighbors may thrive.”

McGreevey is running to replace Jersey City Mayor Steve Fulop, who is running for governor.

Gov. Phil Murphy endorsed McGreevey last month.

Jersey City Councilman James Solomon, another mayoral candidate, released an anti-corruption platform Wednesday.

“We need to bring real change to Jersey City and that starts with strident anti-corruption policies that ensure accountability and trust in government,” Solomon said in a release. “All too often, Jersey City and Jersey as a whole have been let down by corrupt politicians who think the rules don’t apply to them.”

Solomon said he would update the city ethics code to prevent nepotism and corruption as well as enhance the city’s transparency protocols.

“As Mayor, I will ensure that our government prioritizes the needs of Jersey City residents over those of developers and political insiders,” Solomon said.
