Peter Murphy was re-elected to a new term as Passaic County Republican chairman tonight without opposition.
Murphy was elected to the Passaic Valley Regional Board of Education in 1984, at age 24. He ousted incumbent George Novak after winning 79% of the vote for the Totowa seat.
In 1986, at age 27, he was elected to the Totowa Borough Council after James Mazzaro chose to step down. He defeated Democrat Jeanette Estremera by a margin of more than 3-1.
He became county chairman following the death of his father, Anthony “Red” Murphy, in 1991, and held the post for a decade when Republicans controlled county government. Murphy returned to office after John Traier declined to seek re-election in 2018.
He is also the longtime Totowa GOP municipal chairman.
Joanie Welch is now the state committeewoman after switching job with now-vice chair Kelley Amico. Lou Crescitelli is the new state committeeman and Jessica Sprague was reappointed counsel.
