Perth Amboy mayoral election headed to a runoff

Diaz leads Caba 33%-30% with a little less than half the votes uncounted

The race to for Perth Amboy’s mayorship is too close to call, and the contest will go to a runoff election next month, the New Jersey Globe projects.

Mayor Wilda Diaz leads Councilman Helim Caba 33%-30% of the vote with 8,425 votes counted and between 7,000 and 8,000 more ballots uncounted. Joe Vas has about 25% of the vote.

Diaz ran on the “Stronger Together” slate with council candidates Bernadette Falcon-Lopez and Junior Iglesia. Caba, whose council seat is up for election, ran on the “2020 Vision for Perth Amboy” slate with Rose Morales and BJ Torres.

Vas’s “Together, Perth Amboy Can Do Better” slate included Vanessa Bermudez and Angel Mota Ramirez.

Doris Fonseca and Terotha Frederick ran with Pabon on the “In It For You” slate. Irizarry, whose council seat is up this year, ran alone.

Rules regarding Perth Amboy’s runoff are still Murphy. While it’s unlikely the race will be held on Dec. 8, as statute dictates, little else is clear about the timing or handling of the race.
