Candice Smith has won the backing of the Sussex County Republican legislative delegation – Senate Minority Leader Steve Oroho and Assemblymen Parker Space and Hal Wirths — to become the next Sussex County GOP chair.
“We’ve all known Candice and her family for years and believe strongly that her leadership style will help unite and strengthen our party as we head into the future,” Oroho, Space, and Wirths said in a statement this afternoon. “As your conservative legislative team for the past decade-plus, we could always count on Jerry to help us take on the liberals in Trenton, while also ensuring that our county and local Republican candidates and elected officials were well-supported back home.”
Smith entered the race today, a few hours after Jerry Scanlan announced that he was retiring after eight years as county chairman.
“It is imperative that our party has strong and consistent leadership that continues that model, while making it even better and more effective.,” the legislators said about Smith, a former Hopatcong school board member.
Oroho and Wirths did not seek re-election this year. Space is expected to replace him in the Senate, with Sussex County Commissioner Dawn Fantasia and Chester Mayor Mike Inganamort likely headed to the State Assembly after winning the Republican primary this week.
Local Republican leaders have confirmed to the New Jersey Globe that mythomaniacal political consultant Bill Winkler will be ditched for good, a move that might help Sussex Republicans heal some of the wounds the career cozener has created over the last two decades.
