Five Democratic incumbents won re-election in Middlesex: Sheriff Mildred Scott, County Clerk Nancy Pinkin, and Commissioners Clary Azcona-Barber (D-New Brunswick), Charles Kenny (D-Woodbridge), and Chanelle Scott McCullum (D-Piscataway), the sheriff’s daughter.
Scott, the only female sheriff in the state, defeated perennial GOP candidate Peter Piser, 64%-36%. Pinkin, a former assemblywoman, won her second term by 67,000 votes against Republican Joseph Wolak, a South Plainfield councilman.
In the county commissioner race, Azcona-Barber, Kenny, and Scott McCullum beat Republicans Gary Hagopian, Anjaneyulu Karnati, and Brian Wojaczyk by about 60,000 votes.
Democrats have not lost a countywide election in Middlesex since 1991.
