Taking a page out of Brian Stack’s playbook, former Gov. James E. McGreevey has formed the McGreevey Civic Association to provide services to Jersey City and Hudson County residents.
The move allows McGreevey to expand his humanitarian footprint in Jersey City while boosting his electoral chances if he runs for Mayor in 2025.
“The Foundation seeks to build a sense of community, shared responsibility, and healthy values through service to those in need,” McGreevey said.
Stack has used a non-profit civic association model for decades as a way of helping the community, including distributing more than 30,000 Thanksgiving turkeys to his constituents. Generations of politicians, including former State Sen. John J. Giblin (D-Newark), Essex County Sheriff John Cryan, Rep. Peter W. Rodino, Jr. (D-Newark), and Newark leader Stephen Adubato effectively used civic associations to build powerful voting blocs.
The new group, formally known as the Jack and Ronnie McGreevey Foundation, named after the former governor’s late parents, looks to serve people in distress and in need of immediate care, home-bound veterans and seniors who need visitation and support, and children and adolescents requiring help for their academic and athletic pursuits.
Jack McGreevey was a decorated U.S. Marine Corps veteran and longtime advocate for those who served in the military. Ronnie McGreevey was a nurse at Jersey City Medical Center.
McGreevey’s civic association is seeking volunteers.
Steve Fulop announced early this year that he would not seek re-election to a fourth term as mayor in 2025 and instead is running for governor.
