Bergen County Democratic Chairman Paul Juliano will retire next month from his position as president and CEO of the New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority and is expected to return to the Board of Directors of Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield.
Gov. Phil Murphy is expected to nominate Juliano today. The State Senate must confirm his nomination.
Juliano will remain as county chairman. He won that post in 2019.
He assumed the top Sports Authority spot in 2023 after Murphy picked him to replace Vincent Prieto. Murphy picked Prieto to lead the authority in early 2018 as a consolation prize after Assembly Democrats replaced him as Speaker and instead chose Craig Coughlin. The original deal was for Prieto to hold the position for three years; he has now been there for five.
It’s unclear who Murphy will pick to replace Juliano, if anyone. A new governor, regardless of party, might seek to install their own pick when they take office in January 2026.
The NJSEA oversees the Meadowlands complex, although a joint venture between the two NFL teams that play at MetLife Stadium, the Giants and the Jets, operates the stadium.
