Joseph Vas, the son of former Perth Amboy Mayor Joe Vas, officially announced his bid for his father’s former seat Thursday.
“Whether it’s providing safe drinking water, controlling the spread of Covid-19, the highest rate in the county, or the basic health and safety of our community, City government and everyone associated over the past 12 years has failed the good people of Perth Amboy at every level,” the younger Vas said. “Perth Amboy is in need of strong qualified leadership to overcome the failure of the last 12 years. It’s time to put qualifications over failure.”
He’s running with businessman Mota Ramirez and Perth Amboy Zoning Board member Vanessa Bermudez, who are both seeking council seats.
The elder Vas served as Perth Amboy mayor for 18 years and as an Assemblyman for six. Perth Amboy Mayor Wilda Diaz ousted Vas in 2008. Vas was convicted on corruption charges related to his alleged use of thousands of dollars of city funds for personal expenses while holding the mayor’s seat.
