Hunterdon County Republicans voted Tuesday night to endorse West Amwell mayor Zachary Rich for an open seat on the Board of Freeholders.

Rich defeated Delaware deputy mayor Charles Herman and Bethlehem mayor Paul Muir to secure party backing for the seat of retiring two-term freeholder Suzanne Lagay.

Freeholder John Lanza won party support for re-election without opposition.

Rich is serving his third term on the West Amwell Township Council and has served four times as mayor.   He had previously announced that he would not seek re-election to his municipal office.

Sheriff Fred Brown was also nominated by acclamation.

Hunterdon has long been one of the few unbreakable Republican bastions in New Jersey.  Democrats have not won a county race since Benjamin Kirkland won his third term in 1979.
