Flemington Councilman Malik Johnston, charged with selling cocaine and methamphetamine to an undercover police officer in February, needs to resign, the Hunterdon County Republican chairman said today.
“I wish to lend my voice to the growing chorus of calls for Malik Johnston to resign from the Flemington Borough Council,” said Gabe Plumer, the Hunterdon GOP leader. “It is untenable for him to continue in public office and he should resign immediately.”
Johnston’s term is up this year, and he is not seeing re-election. He has pleaded not guilty and has so far resisted other calls for his resignation.
Flemington is a politically competitive town that tossed a Democratic mayor last year in place of Republican Marcia Karrow, a former state senator. Johnston, a Democrat, is part of a 5-1 Democratic majority on the borough council.
Republican Councilwoman Kimberly Tilly is seeking re-election on a slate with Donald Eckel. Democrats are running Adrienne Fusaro and Trent Levitt.
