Hillside Democratic Municipal Chairman Anthony Salters was charged today with filing a false federal income tax return in 2013.

The U.S. Attorney’s office alleges that Salters filed a tax return falsely stating that the income of his business, Media Allies, LLC, was zero.

According to a complaint, Salters and Media Allies had “substantial gross receipts” in 2013, with checks totaling $104,411 payable to the company were deposited into a bank account in which Salters was the “sole authorized signer.”

Payers of those checks, the government alleges, were the City of Orange Township, the Paterson Municipal Utilities Authority, the Newark Housing Authority, a political campaign committee, and a company associated with a camp where a program was to be conducted for high school football teams affiliated with Newark public schools.

Authorities found records, communications and unsigned agreements that say Salters entered into financial agreements with the various entities.

Internal Revenue Service Kenneth Long said Salters received $45,372 from the Newark Housing Authority, $30,824.94 from the City of Orange Township and $7,290.99 from the Paterson Municipal Utilities Authority.

Authorities said he received $9,500 from the political action committee and $9,400 from the unnamed company.
